FHCA launches new LTC Emergency Preparedness Portal

FHCA has launched a new website – www.LTCprepare.org – which provides a gateway to tools, resources and information on emergency preparedness topics specifically for skilled nursing and post-acute care centers, as well as assisted living communities.

Resources on the web portal are organized into four broad categories – Staying Connected, Planning And Response, Training And Exercise and Disaster Recovery. A powerful search tool helps visitors browse the contents of the site and each category by words or phrases. Visitors can pose a question which will be fielded by FHCA staff and the Association’s Emergency Preparedness Council. As information needs and corresponding resources are identified, those resources may be added to the portal, helping to improve its quality and usefulness for long term care providers.

Categories on the Portal Include:

  • Staying Connected, with links to national and state information sources for disaster news and updates. Looking for a link to the National Hurricane Center? Staying Connected gets you there.
  • Planning & Response, with tools and resources to improve all-hazards preparedness planning, as well as information to assist in executing a response. Looking for a planning guide for LTC centers? This category hits the mark.
  • Training & Exercise, with tools, resources and examples for training and exercise, critical to preparedness. Need a scenario for an exercise for your care center? Visit this category for a wealth of resources.
  • Disaster Recovery, with resources and information for LTC providers seeking guidance to direct recovery or mitigation efforts. Looking for information about water damage? This category includes resources on this topic, plus others.

FHCA collaborated on the development of the website with Emory University’s Preparedness and Emergency Response Research Center, which was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a continuation of a long term care (LTC) emergency preparedness research project first funded in 2009. The FHCA Quality Foundation’s Emergency Preparedness Council and the Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of Preparedness and Response also provided input on the site.

Though designed with a Florida audience in mind, the site includes many resources useful to long term care centers in other states and regions.

As Florida’s long term care providers continue to stay diligent and remain proactive when it comes to preparing and planning for emergency situations, FHCA wants to encourage them to visit www.LTCprepare.org regularly for important resources and tools.

U.S Department of Health and Human Services- ASPR Website

In response to a 2008 Government Accountability Office (GAO) recommendation, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) developed a Communities of Interest (COI) SharePoint site (i.e., a clearinghouse) to better disseminate information and manage documents; share promising practices and ideas; and provide a workspace where users from inside and outside HHS/ASPR can come together to share documents and ideas regarding the crisis standards of care (CSC) and allocation of scarce resources (ASR). HHS/ASPR uses the term “communities of interest” to describe and include all of the interested parties involved in CSC and ASR planning.
